Goal setting - part 2

Bolstering resolve and preparing for challenges

July 13, 2022 – Bolstering resolve and preparing for challenges

There’s another part to goal-setting, and it’s probably the most critical to the overall success of your quest: bolstering your resolve and preparing yourself for challenges and obstacles that you anticipate along the way. This is about accountability, fortification, and breaking your goal down into smaller steps.

Accountability

Name three people that you are going to tell about your goal, and then tell them. I’m going to tell: my husband, my sister, and my mom. I also write this blog, so that’s another form of accountability.

Fortification

Think of all the possible ways that you could be hindered from your goal, and brainstorm how to overcome those hurdles.

Obstacle or challengeStrategies to overcome
Laziness or apathyStart each morning with a plan for the dayPrioritize habits and do hotter items firstTake each day one at a time – if you have an off day, that’s ok. Pick it up again tomorrow.Track progress on your habit tracker
On vacation or out of townDo everything that you can wherever you areIf you can’t do something because it’s not available to you, it doesn’t count as missedPlan ahead to choose new habits that you can do while away
“Too busy”Start each morning with a plan for the dayPrioritize habits and do hotter items first
“It’s too hard”Prioritize habits and do hotter items firstTake each day one at a time – if you have an off day, that’s ok. Pick it up again tomorrow.Reconsider a particular habit that’s proving difficult for you; break it down or even replace it with another if it’s not working out

I’m sure there are more obstacles out there! I’ll add them as I think of them or encounter them!

Breaking down your goal

We’ve already talked about taking this challenge day by day, even though it’s a year-long goal. And the steps are further broken down by week with each new habit. Normally in this section, I would list out specific steps that I am going to take today, this week, and this month, to help me get to my goal. But since each week is different, I’ll list a few things each week to help me along the way.

Today, I’ll:

  • Tell my husband about my goal.
  • Tell my sister about my goal.
  • Track my habits.

This week, I’ll:

  • Decide on and purchase a hosting package and domain name.
  • Tell my mom about my goal.
  • Start browsing ideas for a website template.
